Prototype 2 launch parties spread the Infection

Johannesburg:
The city of Johannesburg seemed calm that night; however, little did it know that a virus had been spreading amongst the population at a rapid rate, this virus was called the Mercer virus… Upon arrival, at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Rosebank Johannesburg, I came into contact with others who seemed keen to spread the infection with me. The plan for the widespread infection was easy enough and it came in the form of Prototype 2, which I might add; had already hit the city of Cape Town at the same time thanks to the team at 2upGamers. With one goal in mind, we all congregated in one of the conference halls to be briefed of the current contamination statistics.

Jarrod Lane from JHBGamers kicked off the event formalities; however, he had already been struck down by the Mercer virus, but he pushed on to provide a sensational introduction to what promised to be great evening filled with Monster Energy drinks, Boerewors rolls and a hands on experience with Prototype 2, thanks to the team at Megarom Games and Maingaming South Africa. After Lane’s initial introduction, Devon Stanton from Megarom Games introduced us to some of the major highlights of Prototype 2, as well as a rather interesting teaser trailer of Diablo III, which made everyone’s excitement levels hit a major high point for the evening.

Once the formalities were out the way, many of the attendees rushed off to socialise, play Prototype 2 and consume as many Monster Energy drinks as humanly possible. If that was not enough, Jarrod Lane and Devon Stanton gave away quite a few Prototype 2 t-shirts and also held a lucky draw, which saw two attendees at the event walk away with a copy of Prototype 2 each.

Overall, the Johannesburg event was a massive success and left a lot of the attendees glowing, which could have been the result of all those Monster Energy drinks, or the fact that they just experienced a really fantastic evening… I think it was quite honestly a little of both.

Cape Town:
Thunder, lightning and pouring rain; all this was not enough to stop gamers from leaving the comfort of their homes to attend the Cape Town launch party for Prototype 2, organised by the guys from 2upGamers. The air was a little icy upon my arrival at the Rygersdal Sports Club in Rondebosch and the crowd of early arrivals was a small one. Did I take a wrong turn somewhere? Was I at the wrong event? Turns out it was neither; it seems as if the weather had made everyone’s journey just a little bit longer.

After a little while, everyone was invited inside and processed at the security checkpoint. Thankfully, I made it past the guards and was ready to spread the Mercer Virus even further. After nearly all of the attendees had grabbed a seat, we were welcomed by Glenn Alexander from the 2upGamers Team. After this warm welcome, the team attempted to make contact with the launch party taking place in Johannesburg, organised by JHBGamers. Unfortunately, we were not able to make contact with them, despite the constant trying. Before allowing those in attendance to go and play Prototype 2, Mr. Alexander decided to give out a few T-shirts to those who could answer questions correctly. Now that’s how you start off the evening!

Three Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles were set up so that many gamers could have a crack at the game at the same time. Man, did they run to those consoles! I swear that I saw one gamer actually standing with a controller in his hand for most of the night. I don’t even think that he had something to eat.

After a little while, food arrived in the form of Hotdogs, New York City Style. The beverage of choice for the evening was Monster Energy Drinks; if nobody was infected upon entering the building, they definitely were after having a sip from that can, with a sugar rush that is.

There were also a few cosplayers who showed up for the event. One gamer was dressed up as a soldier in full military gear while another was outfitted like the anti-hero of the first Prototype game, Alex Mercer, complete with blade-arm. Also, I’m pretty sure that I saw someone dressed as Goku or Gohan from the anime series, Dragonball Z. However, there could be only one attendee who could win the prize of having the best outfit. That prize went to the gamer outfitted like Alex Mercer. You may be asking, “What prize did he get for his effort?” Well, he was lucky enough to receive the Prototype 2 Blackwatch Collector’s Edition. How awesome is that?

All in all, it was a great event. Lot’s of socialising took place and many laughs were had throughout the evening. Everyone in attendance was even lucky enough to receive in-game DLC for Prototype 2, courtesy of Megarom at both events. The end of the evening also had many gamers excited as the 2upGamers 5th Round would be taking place on May 4th, not too long to wait until the next get-together.

Old faces and very new tricks: Nintendo stand at rAge 2011

‘I waited impatiently behind a kid who didn’t really seem to know what he was doing’ a twenty-five year-old male rAge Expo visitor tells me, as he begins to talk about his experience of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. ‘The funny thing is I didn’t even know that the game was going to be here, as it was one of this years most highly anticipated 3DS release.’

It is interesting to me that Nintendo has managed to constantly breathe new life into its now long-standing characters such as Link and Super Mario. I watched children that were as young as I was when I first met Super Mario on the SNES console, enjoy a mass multiplayer game on the handheld 3DS console with all too familiar characters. It got me thinking that Nintendo has managed to establish its virtual concepts as a real-world playground of Cops and Robbers or Tag; As Nintendo is becoming a fundamental part of how children learn and develop through playing.

It is no surprise really, that Nintendo has managed to do this. After all, the company has been around since 1889, when it started out creating card games. It has a lot of experience in being sensitive to the needs of a changing society. The real question is, does the company simply ‘leave luck to heaven’ or does it have a multitude of ingenious minds that continually reshape old ideas into something new and relevant for today’s gamers, be it the long time fans ot those just getting their hands on their first console?

ITF Gaming, editor and owner, Darryl Linington says, ‘Nintendo has built a phenomenal reputation over the years, and I personally believe that the company has a great approach when it comes to fun, education and family orientated entertainment.’

He continues by saying, ‘I remember back when I was 6 years old, my father came home with this contraption that would change my life forever. The contraption was a Nintendo NES and I had heard about them on the playground at school. I watched eagerly as my father set it up, and then eventually let myself and my older brother figure out how it actually worked. Once we figured it out, I remember playing Duck Hunt, Hogan’s Alley, Excite Bike and the ever so popular Super Mario Bros for days on end.’

‘I thank Nintendo for introducing me to video games and compliments of this introduction, I have learnt so much over the years. I feel that video games have inspired me to be the person I am today, and I hope that the industry will continue to inspire and focus on developing young minds through education, imagination and inspiration.’ He concludes.

Heroic mutants and devious demons: Megarom at rAge 2011

The Megarom stand was probably one of the places that I spent most of my time at rAge this year. What excited me the most was 2k’s The Darkness II. It was similar to the first game in the comic-based series, except this time it featured quad-wielding, meaning that you can wield four weapons simultaneously. The protagonist Jackie Estacado can now use two guns and two demon arms at once. The player also has more control over summoned minions and the graphics have been given more of a comic feel through the introduction of the cell shaded graphics. Even at this early stage in production (this was not even a Beta version yet) the game looks and plays flawlessly, making for an enjoyable experience.

Additionally, Megarom showcased a preview of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations that was almost hidden away in a booth, like a contract killer in the shadows. Dark Souls was also on show and is anticipated as one of the hardest games to be released in the near future. The demo definitely lives up to being difficult as I could not even get past the first opponent the first few times I attempted to.

Aside from this, I played the latest Marvel title, X-men: Destiny, which predominantly appears to be a third-person beat-em-up, action title. X-men: Destiny allows the player to alter the destiny of his/her character by creating unique mutants as he/she plays throughout the game. I also tried my hand at the latest Final Fantasy, however I am out of practice and I didn’t get very far in the demo. One thing I did notice was the new Final Fantasy has opened up and will be staying true to the original concept, by offering players a non-linear experience… unlike the previous title.

Megarom also hosted a preview of Tomb Raider. The demonstration went a little further than the footage seen at E3 earlier this year. It showed that Lara can visit locations that are seen far off in the horizon, completely reinventing the franchise as a sandbox title. The Hitman preview also looked promising, although I couldn’t help thinking that it wasn’t bringing anything new to the table, unlike the Darkness II.

The Megarom stand and events definitely stood out amongst the others, but what else can you expect from one of the top leaders in video game distribution in South Africa?

Uncharted: Golden Abyss Review

Welcome to the world of Uncharted… on the PlayStation Vita! Now for those of you wondering how you go from a rather large television screen to the smaller, more compact screen of the Vita, it’s actually rather easy. However, is Uncharted: Golden Abyss any good? Let’s find out!!!

Uncharted: Golden Abyss is set before the events that occurred in the original uncharted title. This time around Nathan Drake is tasked to try to uncover the mystery behind the 400-year old massacre of a Spanish expedition. During this venture, Nathan is caught in the middle of a rivalry between Jason Dante, an old friend, and Marisa Chase, whose origins I will not disclose as it would be classified as a spoiler.

When it comes to the storyline of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, fans of the series will soon notice that it is an originally designed, classic and in-depth addition to the world of Uncharted. This will truly surprise those who have ventured into the world of the PlayStation Vita, as some may have been expecting a rather dumbed down version of the original titles.

Nathan Drake’s Journal makes a return, which is filled with the collectibles you find throughout the adventure. These collectables come in the form of photos you will need to take, charcoal rubbings you need to rub and other interesting collectibles. The mere fact that you have to use the rear touchpad and the touch screen display in order to clean off items, piece together maps and complete charcoal rubbings is a major incentive to try out this title. While using the mentioned options is a bonus, there is also the simple to use controls that can be used in order to do all this; however, I would recommend using the Vita’s above-mentioned features in order to get the job done.

Mixing up the gameplay a bit is also the addition of onscreen swiping actions, which will involve swiping your finger across the screen in order to counter attacks, cut hedges to reveal secret areas and complete additional actions. This mixes things up quite a bit; however it does take a little time to get used to this feature.

Uncharted Golden Abyss is a visually stunning title when it comes to graphics. This can be seen in the luscious green grass and the truly stunning lighting effects. I wouldn’t say that it looks as good as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves or Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception but it certainly is on par with the first Uncharted title.

When it comes to sound, Uncharted: Golden Abyss is a clear winner, especially if you use a headset or earphones. The voice acting is superb as always, and the music featured throughout the title is nothing less than top notch.

Conclusion:
Uncharted: Golden Abyss is a perfect example of what the PlayStation Vita can do. Players will thoroughly enjoy the captivating storyline, beautiful graphics and amazing sound; however as much as I did enjoy this title, I did come across a few problem areas. On occasions Nathan Drake tends to get stuck in certain areas, which is generally fixed by a quick reboot of the title.

Additionally, there are certain switches that involve Nathan and Marisa to work together in order to open a door… this tends to be phenomenal task as Marisa tends to do her own thing on occasions, which can be rectified once again via rebooting the title. While these glitches are present within Uncharted: Golden Abyss, they are not entirely game breaking; however, it is slightly annoying having to keep restarting from the same checkpoint due to them.

Heavy Rain Review

A Different approach to the world of gaming! Developed by Quantic Dream and most definitely a PlayStation 3 exclusive, we wonder how this new style of game-play will affect our Sofa, our wrists and our cheese-puff loving Fingers. But before we get into that, let’s get straight to the Voice Talent.

With no voice we have no game, with no game, the only Heavy Rain Gamers will experience is accumulated thunder showers… Gamers need not purchase an umbrella as Heavy Rain will set the mood. The Voices are in my head? No they are on your screen! Quantic Dream used the voice talents of: Sam Douglas as Scott Shelby, who has featured in a variety of films, which include: Alien Autopsy, Agent Cody Banks 2, Snatch, and the upcoming release Tribe.

Leon Ockenden as Norman Jayden, featuring on a variety of television programs which include: Heartbeat, Heroes and Villains, Tripping Over and Hustle.

Judy Beecher as Madison Paige, in the English Version, her stacked up film career includes: Only in Paris, Simone, Perfect Pitch, Bloodline and the upcoming release Cameraman.

Pascal Langdale as Ethan Mars Featuring on a variety of movies and television programs Pascals arsenal of movies and programs include: My Family, Spooks, The Bill and J’auraid Voule etre un danseur.

With a phenomenal voice cast heavy rain delivers. But where are the Cheese-Puffs? Wait you will experience something far more tasty when digging into heavy Rain, now for those of you who want game-play let’s take a gander into the immerse world of Heavy Rain.

Six-Axis, which is what, will completely appeal to any Gamer out there.
With the usual use of the Six-Axis Controller, gamers feel more involved in the game-play; Quantic Dream has taken this to the next Level! With Gamers being prompted to move the Six-Axis controller in various motions and including vast amounts of Quick-time Events, Gamers are thrown into the world of heavy Rain, While throwing their control about like an individual that is allergic to bee’s, which proves quite entertaining, as the interactive level of game-play is something we have never witnessed before. While missing certain Quick time movements is not a train smash, the game does not end, if a certain character is wasted the story progresses to the next available character.

Tori Amos? Will not be making an appearance in Heavy Rain! Although the massive Story line is one that is emotional, riveting, gripping and pulls a few surprises on the Gamer, and no! Not pulling his pants down in front of a room full of people but by twisting and turning.

The Story revolves around the 4 Characters and the Infamous “Origami Killer” The game opens with Ethan Mars, spending his time with his family. He later loses sight of one of his Kids, at a busy shopping Centre. His Son is found lingering on the busy street, Ethan tries to save him from an oncoming car, which is probably driven by a (cheese-puff munching machine) tragically his son is killed, while Ethan is injured, which puts him into a coma for 6 months. Two years after the accident, Ethan has depression, he has blackouts that last for several hours on end, His wife has left him, and his remaining Son is distant and detached from him, Ethan also has a fear of crowds to add to his problems, while at a park Ethan has another blackout, and wakes to find his Son missing. This event is eventually tied to the “Origami Killer”.

Conclusion:
An abrupt Ending? Yes for those gamers interested in finding out what happens next, Grab yourself a Copy of Heavy Rain to experience a truly masterful release and PS3 Exclusive from Quantic Dream.

Crysis 2 Review

Crysis 2 has been on the lips of most gamers the past few weeks, and it has generated a lot of hype over the internet. However, does it really live up to its predecessor? Well you can carry on reading this review or head down to your local retailer…I suggest reading the review first.

Developed by Crytek and published by Electronic Arts, Crysis 2 is the latest first-person-shooter (FPS) to grace our consoles and PC systems.

Crysis 2 is set in New York City in the year 2023. The city is in turmoil due to an alien infestation (this is portrayed in the opening sequence as a newsreel style broadcast, which added a nice authentic feel to Crysis 2) and a tactical team has been deployed into New York City via submarine to extract Doctor Nathan Gould.

This was where we were introduced to the new protagonist in Crysis 2, “Alcatraz.” All hell breaks loose when the alien race named the “Ceph” attack the city, destroying everything in their wake. Due to the attack, Alcatraz and his squad are forced to abandon ship and swim to the surface. A secondary attack is then directed at the squad, leaving Alcatraz as the only presumed survivor.

Laurence “Prophet” Barnes proceeds to save Alcatraz but seems extremely overwhelmed, as the initial support team sent to assist him had already been wiped out. Left with no other decision, since the Manhattan virus has infected him, Prophet equips Alcatraz with the Nanosuit 2.0., Prophet then kills himself in order for the Nanosuit to break the link with Prophet and correctly assimilate with Alcatraz.

I will not go into too much detail on the initial story, but I will tell you that the team at Crytek has developed a decent plot line, which offers about 10-12 hours of playtime.

Crysis 2 uses the Nanosuit as a window to the world. Everything you see and do is viewed from a suit perspective, which increases the appeal of this title.

Combat can be played out in two ways; stealth and sneak or all-out armoured assault, but be warned as combat is intense. I found myself loading the game very often after being riddled by bullets. Once you fire on an enemy, your position is given away and every bit of firepower is focused in your general direction. This is due to the A.I. in Crysis 2 being extremely intelligent (which we do not tend to see in other FPS titles), you can either stealth yourself and move away from your last known location or knuckle down and consider your options for the battle ahead.

Crysis 2 displays tactical options that can be viewed through the Nanosuit. These options provide gamers with areas where they can flank enemies, snipe enemies, resupply ammunition, and observe enemy movement; these options greatly assist with the planning of all-out assaults or sneaking past unsuspecting enemies.

Another nice touch is the suit upgrade menu being your actual hand; by selecting individual fingers, various different upgrades can be selected during the course of the game. However, only one of each upgrade can be active at once. This adds great replayability to this title, as previously unlocked abilities and upgrades can be used in completed chapters.

The initial campaign mode was a great experience; the only downside was on the rare occasion the A.I. seem to glitch and run into objects like walls and vehicles without correcting their course.

Crysis 2 is probably one of the best-looking FPS titles I have come across; the level design is stunning and the visuals promote sensory overload on occasions. The only downfall with these beautiful environments is that you tend to focus more on the visuals rather than the actual story progression, so don’t be entirely confused when you have absolutely no idea on what’s going on.

Apart from the graphics, the sound also plays a major role in Crysis 2; hearing bullets echo down the street, buildings being destroyed and even the sound of a much heavier Alcatraz when his armor is equipped is also a very well implemented sensory experience.

Online:
So generally most FPS games do come with a multiplayer mode, but is the online play as good as the campaign in Crysis 2, my answer hell yeah!

12 multiplayer maps await those of you brooding to get online, as well as six different modes of play that offer gamers various choices of what map to play and how to strategise individually or team assault. These include Crash Site and Team Instant Action. There are around 20 weapons to destroy opponents with, as well as some great customisation options to use to your advantage. My online experience was pleasurable although, there have been some complaints about servers being down on occasions.

Conclusion:
Overall, Crysis 2 offers a visually satisfying experience with the sound to match. Game-play encourages a think before you shoot approach, instead of the general run and gun approach that other FPS titles tend to offer gamers; this is where Crysis 2 is unique. The storyline is solid and offers a good all around experience.

The downside:
Crysis offers some great A.I. that will challenge you greatly but on the odd occasion, you will witness them either running into cars or walls like mindless zombies. There have also been some complaints about servers being down on occasion when attempting to play online.

What to expect at rAge 2011

The rAge expo has officially kicked off this weekend at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg.

ITF Gaming had the opportunity to join in on all the fun by hosting some awesome prize give-aways compliments of Apex Interactive and the team on the Nintendo 3DS stand. The Nintendo 3DS stand is showcasing an array of upcoming 3DS titles to test out, so make sure to swing past the stand and chat to the guys about anything and everything Nintendo related. The team from ITF Gaming will be situated at the Nintendo 3DS on the 01/10/2011 from 10am – 12pm and on 02/10/2011 from 12:00pm to 13:00pm.

Apart from all the Nintendo awesomeness, ITF Gaming has compiled a list of the must see exhibitions at rAge 2011. If you are only joining in on the rAge action on Saturday, then this will give you a preview of what to expect.

Heroic mutants and devious demons: Megarom at rAge 2011

The Megarom stand was probably one of the places that I spent most of my time at rAge this year. What excited me the most was 2k’s The Darkness II. It was similar to the first game in the comic-based series, except this time it featured quad-wielding, meaning that you can wield four weapons simultaneously. The protagonist Jackie Estacado can now use two guns and two demon arms at once. The player also has more control over summoned minions and the graphics have been given more of a comic feel through the introduction of the cell shaded graphics. Even at this early stage in production (this was not even a Beta version yet) the game looks and plays flawlessly, making for an enjoyable experience.

Additionally, Megarom showcased a preview of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations that was almost hidden away in a booth, like a contract killer in the shadows. Dark Souls was also on show and is anticipated as one of the hardest games to be released in the near future. The demo definitely lives up to being difficult as I could not even get past the first opponent the first few times I attempted to.

Aside from this, I played the latest Marvel title, X-men: Destiny, which predominantly appears to be a third-person beat-em-up, action title. X-men: Destiny allows the player to alter the destiny of his/her character by creating unique mutants as he/she plays throughout the game. I also tried my hand at the latest Final Fantasy, however I am out of practice and I didn’t get very far in the demo. One thing I did notice was the new Final Fantasy has opened up and will be staying true to the original concept, by offering players a non-linear experience… unlike the previous title.

Megarom also hosted a preview of Tomb Raider. The demonstration went a little further than the footage seen at E3 earlier this year. It showed that Lara can visit locations that are seen far off in the horizon, completely reinventing the franchise as a sandbox title. The Hitman preview also looked promising, although I couldn’t help thinking that it wasn’t bringing anything new to the table, unlike the Darkness II.

The Megarom stand and events definitely stood out amongst the others, but what else can you expect from one of the top leaders in video game distribution in South Africa?
